Kenneth Daynata delivered in the clutch to help Jose Rizal University avoid a meltdown against San Beda University, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 25-27, 15-13, in the NCAA Season 99 men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

The veteran outside hitter top-scored the Heavy Bombers with 22 points, highlighted by the back-to-back aces that sealed the grind out victory for JRU, while also grabbing 12 receptions.

Team captain Windel Laurenciana churned out a triple-double of 16 markers, 11 digs, and 17 receptions as JRU was suddenly on rampage with back-to-back wins to improve to 2-5 and remain alive in the playoff contention.

After winning the first two sets against a San Beda side that’s on a three-game slump, the Heavy Bombers ran out of steam in the succeeding sets before regaining their form in the decider.

Matthew Miguel nailed two consecutive points before an Arnel Tolentino attack error saw JRU enjoying a 6-3 cushion, which was immediately followed by a 3-0 run from the Red Spikers to force another deadlock.

Anrie Bakil, whose two consecutive solid quick kills gave San Beda a one-point edge, committed a costly service error for a tied affair at 11-all.

Van Book then sent San Beda to a crucial 13-11 lead after denying Daynata on his attempt from the opposite wing, but the latter would make up for it with the game-winning aces.

Miguel and Bryle Alipan both chipped in 11 points as JRU spoiled the 27-point showing from Book, who also collected eight digs.
