Amid the scorching heat, the Schools Division Office in Iriga City is contemplating the use of modular learning to address the challenges posed by the current weather conditions.

Annabelle Penolio, the Faculty President of San Nicolas Elementary School, teaches 30 Grade 5 students in a classroom with limited electric fans.

She worries about the potential health issues that may arise due to the intense heat.

“Igwa ngani kami na-experience last year na pirmi sindang absent due to may fever daa, may sipon. Tapos igwang medyo worst experience kami na kadakol eskwelang nagno-nosebleed dahil sa sobrang init,” Penolio said.

Penolio suggests the adoption of a modified schedule, combining modular learning with in-person classes.

“Mag-modular na lang. Halimbawa ngayong week, modular. Next week, maglaog sinda para ma-follow-up mi si answer ninda kung talagang nagmo-modular sinda,” Penolio added.

This approach aims to minimize exposure to extreme heat, ensuring a conducive learning environment.

Adrian Quinto, 10, a Grade 5 pupil, finds it hard to focus on lessons because of the heat.

“Mainit man po dito kasi ‘yung bintana. ‘Yung silaw po galling sa araw, pumapasok po kapag tanghali kaya mainit talaga dito,” Quinto said.

In the previous year, the Department of Education’s Schools Division Office in Iriga City allowed the use of modular learning in response to health concerns caused by the intense heat.

The office is now considering revisiting this approach in the current year, if necessary.

“Pigde-determine man iyan base sa declaration kang PAGASA. Kung mainit o bako siyang mainit. Kung normal lang ang panahon, mabalik ang mga aki sa classroom. Pero kapag medyo mainit and kaipuhan na mag-declare ang school head provided na may pagkaaram ang SDS,”  Noel Panga, Division Information Officer at SDO Iriga City, said.

Besides ensuring quality education, the Department of Education (DepEd) also considers the well-being of the students.  —GMA Regional TV
