About a dozen thunderstorms hit the Los Angeles basin on Thursday as an unsettled weather system moved through the region.
While Thursday began as a sunny day in LA, the sunny skies turned to gray clouds in the afternoon hours that led to pouring rain in the San Fernando Valley and East LA areas, according to National Weather Service meteorologist James Brotherton.
In addition to thunderstorms,a flash flood warning was issued to parts of the San Fernando Valley, including Chatsworth, Van Nuys, and Granada Hills, according to Brotherton. Drivers should were warned to be on the lookout for flooded roadways.
The storm was moving south east towards West Covina and El Monte on Thursday evening, Brotherton said.
He added that folks should keep alert of changing weather patterns, especially if outdoors while a thunderstorm is brewing. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” Brotherton said. Any thunderstorms can produce lighting, and if you’re outside you’re at risk of being struck, he added.
“Whether you’re in Oklahoma or Los Angeles, the [thunderstorm] ingredients are the same.”
The storms were likely to begin dissipating around dark, according to Brotherton.
