Defense, military and police officials called on Filipinos to be united amid challenges in commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) on Tuesday.

Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. paid tribute to the Filipino veterans who fought for the freedom, independence, and peace of the country.

“Sa pagdiriwang ng ika-82 na Araw ng Kagitingan, ang paggunita natin sa katapangan, serbisyo, at sakripisyo ng ating mga beterano, ay akma sa temang, ‘Pagpaparangal sa Kagitingan ng mga Beterano: Saligan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino’,” Teodoro said.

(In the celebration of the 82nd year of the Day of Valor, our commemoration of the bravery, service, and sacrifice of our veteran fits the theme, ‘Honoring the Valor of Veterans: Foundation of United Filipinos’)

“Magsilbi nawang inspirasyon ang kanilang kagitingan sa pagkakaisa ng sambayanan at sa pagtugon sa mga hamon ng panahon, tungo sa mapayapa, matatag, at maunlad na Bagong Pilipinas,” he added.

(May their valor serve as an inspiration in the unity of the people and in responding to the challenges of the times, towards a peaceful, stable, and prosperous New Philippines.)

For his part, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. acknowledged the efforts of “our heroes who valiantly fought for the freedom and liberties we enjoy today.”

“As we commemorate this historic day, let us not only reflect on the sacrifices of the past but also reaffirm our commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, peace, and freedom for which our forefathers fought so valiantly,” he said.

“Let us honor their legacy by standing united in the face of challenges and working tirelessly towards a brighter future for our beloved country,” he added.

The AFP looks back to the sacrifices made by soldiers who defended the Philippines in past wars and armed conflicts, according to Brawner

“Their selflessness and commitment to duty serve as an enduring inspiration to all Filipinos, reminding us of the true meaning of valor and patriotism,” Brawner said.

“May the spirit of courage and heroism that defines Araw ng Kagitingan continue to guide and inspire us as we strive to build a nation worthy of the sacrifices of our brave heroes,” he added.

The Philippine National Police (PNP), meanwhile, recognized the Filipino and American soldiers who defended the country and endured hardships during the Bataan Death March.

According to the PNP, their sacrifices serve as a reminder of the true price of freedom and the importance of standing against tyranny and oppression.

“As we commemorate this historic event, let us reaffirm our commitment to upholding the principles of freedom, democracy, and sovereignty,” the PNP said.

“Let us honor the memory of our heroes by fostering unity, justice, and peace within our communities,” it added.
