The Department of Migrant Workers said it is monitoring possible situations in Japan after a Magnitude-6.0 earthquake hit the country.

In a statement, the agency said it has activated the necessary protocols to ensure the safety and know the status of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in areas affected by the quake.

“Both Migrant Workers Office (MWO)-Tokyo and MWO-Osaka stand ready to assist OFWs should they require so,” read the statement.

The earthquake occurred shortly after noon on Thursday, with an epicenter located near the coast of Fukushima Prefecture in the northeastern part of Honshu.

The quake happened just a day after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit Taiwan on April 4, leaving thousands injured and hundreds of individuals still missing.

As of June 2023, Japan’s Ministry of Justice said that there were 69,406 OFWs in the country. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
