Six people were rescued after their motorbanca capsized in Pangutaran Island, Sulu over the weekend, the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) said.
In a statement released on Monday, the NFWM said M/B Lorena was from Mapun heading to Zamboanga City when it encountered rough seas and strong currents on Saturday.
Panama-flagged bulk carrier M/V Navios Lumen spotted the motorbanca and helped its passengers and crew.
After receiving a report, Navy’s PC-390 was deployed to transfer the crew and passengers, the NFWM said.
The rescued people were brought to Bongao’s disaster office where they received counseling, health check, and other assistance before they returned to their homes.
“We are glad that the boatmen were safe and in good condition after the bulk carrier found them and handed them over to us,” NFWM commander Rear Admiral Donn Anthony Miraflor said.
“We are also glad that we can work promptly together with our friends from civilian vessels that transit our waters and with the aide of our LMS, to ensure every seafarer’s safety especially during rough seas and bad weather, ” he added. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
