The power situation in the Visayas grid has worsened to red alert from the previously hoisted yellow alert, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said Thursday.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the Visayas grid will be placed under red alert from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The grid operator earlier said the grid be under yellow alert from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. as available capacity only stands at 2,662 MW against a peak demand of 2,465 MW.

“The Visayas grid was upgraded to red alert status due to higher forecast demand this evening,” the NGCP said.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

The NGCP said the Visayas grid has an available capacity of 2,410 MW against a peak demand of 2,345 MW.

The grid operator said 13 power plants are on forced outage, while nine others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 696.7MW unavailable to the Visayas grid. — Ted Cordero/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
