3RD TIME FOR PH

Filipinos shone in a recent competition for law students across the globe, Unang Balita reported on Wednesday.

The Filipino team from the UP College of Law defeated more than 600 teams from over 100 countries in the prestigious Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition held in Washington DC in the United States.

According to the UP College of Law, the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition is the “oldest, largest, and most esteemed moot competition worldwide, attracting participation from law schools across the globe.”

The victory marked the third time a Filipino team won in the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition, after similar achievements in 1995 and 2004.

The UP Law team was composed of Mary Regine Dadole, Pauline De Leon, Pauline Samantha Sagayo, Chinzen Viernes, and Ignacio Lorenzo Villareal,

Aside from the team victory, Villareal was also recognized as the Best Oralist during the competition.

“Winning the world championship was a dream. I take a lot of pride in it. I think our team put a lot of work to make sure that we’ll able to achieve this result,” said Villareal.

According to Viernes, four other Filipino teams also reached the national rounds of the competition.

“It shows the quality of the legal education in the Philippines as a whole. It’s very good. Nakikipagsabayan talaga tayo with other universities na mas funded, na mas may resources,” Viernes said.

(We are at par with other universities that are more funded and have better resources.)

Atty. Darlene Berberabe, dean of UP College of Law, congratulated the team for its achievement.

“To be pitted against the best of the best in this international competition, talagang napakalaking karangalan ang ibinigay sa UP law, sa UP community at sa buong Pilipinas,” Berberabe said.
