Decorated basketball star Sean Chambers has been tapped as the new head coach of Far Eastern University men’s basketball team ahead of UAAP Season 87.
The school announced the development on Monday as the 59-year-old Chambers, known for his dominant run in the PBA as an import, will replace Denok Miranda, who called the shots for only a year in Season 86.
“FEU Athletics is pleased to announce the appointment of Sean Chambers as head coach of the FEU Tamaraws men’s basketball team,” FEU said in a Facebook post.
“After a successful playing career in the PBA, Coach Sean is excited to return to the Philippines, his second home and brings with him a wealth of experience with a career dedicated to education, coaching, and mentoring the youth.”
Chambers is a multi-titled PBA reinforcement, leading the now-defunct Alaska franchise to six titles in the 90s and was hailed the Best Import in 1996. His jersey no. 20 was also retired by the Aces.
His assignment as the new Tamaraws head coach came after the squad missed the Final Four in the last two editions, halting their eight-season streak of semifinals appearances.
Chambers, for his part, said he has closely witnessed the growth of collegiate basketball in the country and is hoping to contribute to its further development.
“Over the years, I’ve closely observed the evolution and spirit of Philippine Collegiate Basketball, witnessing the remarkable growth and development of young players. I firmly believe there is ample opportunity for me to contribute to their journey towards reaching their fullest potential on and off the court,” Chambers said.
“I am profoundly grateful and humbled by the opportunity to return to the Philippines as the Head Coach of the FEU Tamaraws. It is an honor to collaborate with FEU management and coaching staff, in our collective mission to reignite the winning culture at FEU.”
Miranda will now serve as head of FEU basketball program and will oversee the development of all FEU basketball teams from Junior High up to the Collegiate ranks.
