Are you planning on showcasing your vocal prowess at “Tanghalan ng Kampeon?”

On Tuesday’s “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,” one of the competition’s judges, Renz Verano, shared the qualities he is looking for in the contestants.

“Unang-una, ang kailangan, maganda ang boses. Kailangan ‘yung intonation, ibig sabihin nasa tono. Ngayon, ‘yung kaniyang star quality, it’s only a bonus. Kailangan maganda ang boses, maganda ang galaw, ‘yung expression ng kaniyang pagkanta, nandun lahat,” the “Remember Me” singer said.

“There is phrasing, there is breathing, there is intonation, there is style. Maraming style kasi eh. Sa pagkanta, meron ‘yung gagamitin mo, kunyari umiiyak ka, meron ‘yun. Hindi lang basta-basta ‘yun.”

Renz explained that in phrasing, “kailangan ‘yung isang phrase mo, may ibig sabihin,” and they are not disrupted by pauses or stops.

Meanwhile, in style, “Kailangan ‘yung kanta na pinili niya, ‘wag nang gagayahin ‘yung original.”

“Siyempre mga amateur pa sila. So, the tendency eh gayahin nila ‘yung original. Maglagay ka ng sarili mong interpretation,” he said.

Renz added that breathing is also important.

“Kailangan tama ‘yung hinga mo,” he said, adding that there’s a difference when proper breathing while singing is practiced.

“Sa ‘kin kasi, ang toka ko as judge is on the technical side. More on the technical side, but first and foremost, kailangan boses,” Renz said.

Renz also said that experience is still the best teacher for singers to properly convey a song’s message.

“‘Pag hindi mo naramdaman ang masawi, paano mo ie-express? ‘Pag hindi mo maramdaman ang nasagot ka, tuwang-tuwa ka, paano mo ie-express? You cannot express this unless you’ve experienced it,” he said.

Aside from “Remember Me,” Renz is also known for his hit songs “Ibang-Iba Ka Na,” “Mahal Kita,” “Keep On Loving You,” and more.

“Tanghalan ng Kampeon” is part of GMA’s show “TiktoClock,” which airs Monday to Friday at 11:15 a.m.
