President Ferdinand ”Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday condemned the killing of four government troops in an ambush in Maguindanao del Sur over the weekend.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Marcos said the incident would strengthen the government’s commitment to halt terror acts in the country.
”We strongly condemn the cowardly ambush that targeted four of our courageous soldiers in Maguindanao del Sur on March 17,” Marcos said.
”This despicable act only to strengthens our resolve to eradicate terrorism from the region and our entire nation.”
Marcos said his administration remains resolute in its commitment to ensure that justice is served for the fallen soldiers. He also ensured that the necessary government assistance will be given to the slain soldiers’ families.
”I have instructed the immediate provision of benefits and assistance to support the families they leave behind,” Marcos said.
According to the 6th Infantry Division, the victims were killed while onboard a civilian vehicle on their way back to the patrol base in Tuayan 1, Datu Hoffer, Maguindanao del Sur at 10 a.m.
The victims were said to have been returning from buying food for Iftar for the Muslim community in their area, which they often did during Ramadan.
Security operations have been tightened around the area while the suspects, who are suspected members of Dawlah Islamiyah – Hassan Group, remain at large.
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Romero Brawner Jr., for his part, said the military will hunt down the perpetrators behind the fatal ambush of the soldiers.
“The AFP vows to hunt down the perpetrators and neutralize these ruthless killers to finally put a stop to their violent acts that disrupt peace and stability in the region,” Brawner said in a statement on Monday.
“We assure the Filipinos that your Armed Forces is firm on its resolve to perform our mandate of protecting the people and the state,” he added.
The Philippine Army said it is working closely with local authorities and community leaders to sustain security measures in the area.
“The Philippine Army condemns the senseless, treacherous and most heinous acts perpetrated by this terrorist group,” said Army chief Lieutenant General Roy Galido.
The AFP and Philippine Army extended their condolences to the families and loved ones of the slain soldiers. —with Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA Integrated News
