Lyceum of the Philippines University secured the commitments of high school standouts Jasper Matienzo and Peter Mulligan as the Pirates continue to gear up for NCAA Season 100.
The 6-foot-3 Matienzo was the leading scorer for the Junior Pirates in the NCAA Season 99 juniors basketball tournament, averaging 11.44 points, 4.78 rebounds, 1.89 assists, 1.44 steals, and 1.0 blocks while the 6-foot guard Mulligan posted 6.56 markers, 2.67 boards, 0.78 dimes, and .56 swats.
Unfortunately for the Junior Pirates, they struggled to convert wins as they finished with a 2-7 win-loss card.
But with the two juniors stars joining the seniors team, Pirates head coach Gilbert Malabanan is confident that they will be a great fit in his system.
“We are delighted that Jasper and Peter have chosen to stay with us. I believe and trust in their capabilities, and they are a great fit for our system,” Malabanan said.
“It is crucial for us to maintain continuity from grassroots to the senior level. Developing players from the grassroots and teaching them our system will make it easier for them when they reach the senior level.”
Matienzo and Mulligan were the latest players to join the Pirates after William Sy, who decided to leave Jose Rizal University after two seasons, as the school eyes to improve its fourth place finish in Season 98.
