The GMA Kapuso Foundation together with its partners will build three classrooms with comfort rooms at the Dagadag Elementary School in Mankayan, Benguet to give students in the community more spaces to learn.
According to a “24 Oras” report on Monday, the additional classrooms are for the children of farmers who work hard to send their children to school and give them a good education.
Farmers in the province constantly battle typhoons that destroy their crops and livelihood.
The family of Teresita Marafo was not spared by the wrath of typhoon Egay when it battered Benguet and nearby provinces in July 2023.
“Mahirap ‘pag dumadating ‘yung mga bagyo…mahirap maging farmer sa mga ganitong sitwasyon (It’s hard when typhoons come. …It’s hard to be a farmer in such situation),” Teresita said.
All their toils are for the future of their two children, she added.
“Para hindi matulad sa amin…kaya gusto namin na makapagtapos sila para umangat sa pamumuhay (We don’t want them to be like us…that’s why we want them to finish their studies so they will have better chances at life),” Teresita said.
GMA Kapuso Foundation will be supported by partners in building the classrooms.
“Iyong ating mga walling ay buhos, lahat kaya niyang ma-withstand ng up to magnitude 8 na lindol and ‘yung ating mga roofing system ay sinigurado natin na matibay siya,” Anel Zantua, GMA Kapuso Foundation supervising engineer.
(The walling will be concrete, they can withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8. We also made sure the roofing system is sturdy)
Rikki Escudero-Catibog, Kapuso Foundation executive vice president and chief operating officer, said the lack of classrooms in the school was raised before the foundation.
“We saw the lack of facilities when we visited the area,” she said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the classrooms.
The 51st Engineer Brigade of the Philippine Army will help in building the classrooms with additional manpower.
During its visit to Mankayan, GMA Kapuso Foundation also distributed vitamins, toys, and food to the residents. The foundation also thanked Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philippines.
Donations for the foundation’s projects may be deposited in its bank account or through Cebuana Lhuillier. They may also be sent via GCash, Shopee and Lazada. Details may be found here: https://www.gmanetwork.com/kapusofoundation/donate. —LDF, GMA Integrated News
