Gil Cuerva won gold at his first jiu-jitsu competition!

The Kapuso actor shared on Instagram that he joined his first ever competition last Saturday and that “it took a lot of convincing.” Gil said he got the gold medal by winning all three of his matches.

“Ironically, prior to the competition, I felt like I wasn’t even ready to compete,” he said.

Gil thanked his coaches for their guidance and for pushing him to do better.

“Through listening to their instructions and by following the gameplan, I was able to win my matches,” he said.

He also thanked his teammates and training partners for believing in him and for their support throughout his jiu-jitsu journey.

“Not bad for a hobbyist, I guess? Hehe,” Gil said. “There’s still so much room for improvement (I’ve only been training for about 9 months) but I’m enjoying the process of learning and the grind to becoming better.”

“First gold of hopefully more to come. Oss!” he added.

Gil started training in 2023 at the age of 28. “It’s never too late to try something new and to reinvent yourself,” he said.

He most recently appeared in “Underage” and an episode of “Tadhana” with his girlfriend Lexi Gonzales.

Gil also starred in the 2022 series “Love You Stranger” with Gabbi Garcia and Khalil Ramos.
