MANILA, Philippines — Firefighters continue to extinguish two forest fires in Itogon, Benguet, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported yesterday.
At a news forum, Edgar Posadas, spokesperson for the OCD, said four forest fires in the province have been placed under control while 14 others were doused after one week.
He said the forest fires were likely caused by warmer temperatures due to El Niño.
While a majority of the forest fires are in the Cordilleras, Posadas said similar incidents were reported in Iloilo and other areas.
He said the regional offices of the OCD are collecting data to determine the extent of damage due to forest fires.
Wildfires have affected parts of Itogon, Tubao and Atok in Benguet as well as Baguio City since January.
Early this week, another forest fire broke out in Bontoc, Mountain Province.
