A fisherman who was missing for three days was rescued off Pangasinan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Monday.

In a statement, the PCG said 32-year-old fisherman Dexter Abalos was found 30 nautical miles off the coast of Agno town on Sunday.

“While on his way back to the shore, his motorbanca was suddenly hit by a dolphin which caused it to capsize,” the PCG said.

“Fortunately, he managed to swim towards a fish marker, locally known as ‘payao,’ and tied his motorbanca to it. Mr Abalos stayed there for days waiting for rescue to arrive.”

The Coast Guard Aviation Force (CGAF) aircraft BN ISLANDER PCG-251 located the fisherman, and Coast Guard Station Pangasinan and Sub-station Bolinao immediately mounted a rescue operation onboard a private motorbanca together with some volunteers.

Rescuers ferried Abalos to the Agno Municipal Fish Port, where the local rural health unit gave him medical treatment. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
