NEW YORK CITY — A Filipino teacher here has received recognition for teaching science and mathematics to public high school students.
Eleuterio Timbol was recently honored with the 2024 SLOAN Award for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics.
According to the Fund for the City of New York website, the award is given to teachers “who go to great lengths to help their students shine.”
“These are educators who achieve superb results while inspiring youth to excel in science and mathematics and pursue careers in related fields,” it said.
Timbol, who was raised in the Philippines as one of nine children to a homemaker and a mechanic, currently teaches at High School for Law Enforcement and Public Safety.
He was praised for his role in facilitating the exchange of Filipino-American educators to the Philippines during summers, as well as enriching the educational landscape in both nations.
In 2022, Timbol was one of the 54 New York State public school teachers who received the Governor’s Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award.
The Filipino teacher is also an active member of professional organizations such as the Association of Filipino-American Teachers of America and the Association of Filipino Teachers in Eastern America. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
