EJ Obiena wins gold to open indoor season in Croatia thumbnail


Filipino Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena won the gold medal in the Memorial Josip Gasparac tournament in Croatia to open his indoor pole vault season on Tuesday (Croatia time).

Obiena cleared 5.83 meters to claim the top spot, which was also a meet record.

Portugal’s Pedro Buaro placed second after clearing 5.73, while American Olen Tray Oates finished third with 5.61 meters.

He will next compete in the ISTAF Indoor meet in Berlin, Germany on February 23, before heading to the World Indoor Championship in Glasgow, Scotland on March 3.

Obiena is one of the four Filipinos who have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside gymnasts Carlos Yulo and Aleah Finnegan and boxer Eumir Marcial.
