The Department of Transportation and the local government of Cebu partnered up to promote and improve active transport and cycling infrastructures in Metro Cebu.

In a statement Tuesday, DOTr said the project would include expansion, upgrading, and maintenance of active transport infrastructure.

Additional bike lanes and end-of-trip facilities would also be installed in Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Cordova and Talisay, with some bike lanes stretching up to 67.19 kilometers in selected roads.

The project will also involve the maintenance and upgrade of the existing 124.69 kilometers of bike lanes and installation of over 138 bike racks and five bike repair stations in 23 locations around Metro Cebu.

Transportation Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure James Andres Melad said the project was an important milestone in recognizing the importance of cycling as an eco-friendly mode of transportation.

“The expansion of our active transport infrastructure is not merely about roads and lanes; it symbolizes our dedication to promoting healthier lifestyles, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing the overall quality of life for our residents,” he said.

“These facilities are not just parking spaces; they are a declaration of our commitment to encouraging active lifestyles, reducing traffic congestion, and providing commuters with viable alternatives to traditional modes of transport,” he added.—Jiselle Anne Casucian/AOL, GMA Integrated News
