Reigning MVP Mary Rhose Dapol and sophomore star Shaila Omipon led University of Perpetual Help System DALTA to a 25-14, 25-14, 25-21 victory against Jose Rizal University in the NCAA Season 99 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

Dapol led the charge after pouring in 16 points while Omipon, who was the top rookie last season, churned out 15 markers anchored on 14 attacks and one service ace as the Lady Altas improved to 1-0, tying defending champion De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde at the top.

The Lady Bombers, despite a comeback attempt in the third frame, fell to a 0-1 hole.

Perpetual cruised to a commanding 23-17 lead in the third frame following the double block of Charisse Enrico and Omipon on the lefty opposite hitter Nicole Deala, moving two points away from the sweep victory.

The wards of JRU head coach Mia Tioseco didn’t want to go down without a fight, unloading a 4-1 rampage to pull to within three. Dapol, however, flaunted her MVP form after soaring above the defenders to punch the game-winning attack.

Dapol and Omipon got ample help from middle blocker Winnie Bedana, who put together nine points highlighted by two blocks while Charmaine Ocado chipped in seven markers.

JRU had a balanced offense, but could not put the clamps on Perpetual with Gayle Batara posting eight points while Deala chimed in with five markers.
