This photo taken on July 30, 2017 shows guerrillas of the New People’s Army (NPA) resting among bushes in the Sierra Madre mountain range, located east of Manila. Fuelled by one of the world’s starkest rich-poor divides, a Maoist rebellion that began months before the first human landed on the moon plods on even though the country now boasts one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Seven communist rebels have surrendered in Masbate.
Lt. Gen. Rhoderick Armamento, Area Police Command-Southern Luzon commander, said one of the surrenderees was identified as James Espares, alias Janjan, of the New People‘s Army’s Bicol Regional Party Command.
Armamento said improvised explosive devices, ammunition and other war materiel were recovered as the surrenderees led authorities to an arms cache in Barangay Ipil in Masbate City.
The rebel returnees are under police and military custody for debriefing and medical examination, among other procedures.
They received cash incentives and will be provided livelihood assistance.
