A Philippine eagle which was found wounded in Kabugao, Apayao has been freed after undergoing three weeks of rehabilitation.

The eagle was found by a farmer last month as the bird was caught in a trap for boars, according to a report on Unang Balita on Wednesday, based on information from GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon.

The farmer brought the eagle to the City Veterinary Office of Laoag for treatment.

While at the veterinary office, it was found that the eagle had some airgun pellets in its body.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the discovery of the Philippine eagle showed that the Philippine ecosystem is still balanced.

The Philippine Eagle Foundation meanwhile reminded the public that catching the Philippine eagle and other wildlife is prohibited by law.

Those found guilty of doing so may face penalties of up to 12 years in jail. —KG, GMA Integrated News
