MANILA, Philippines — Professional climber Alain Robert, popularly known as the “French Spider-Man,” caught the attention of Filipinos once more after he scaled a tower in Makati earlier this week.

Last March 5, the 61-year-old Robert climbed up Makati’s GT International Tower, the same tower he attempted five years ago and was subsequently arrested and fined P1,000.

History more or less repeated itself as authorities took him in upon finishing his climb of the 712-foot building, one of the highest skycrapers in the Philippines.

Robert’s attempt, done without a harness, drew attention from crowds, which caused some traffic in Makati’s business district.

According to reports, Robert made the climb to spread awareness and support for the Philippines in its maritime dispute with China regarding the West Philippine Sea.

The climber previously scaled other famous buildings like Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, Paris’ Eiffel Tower, New York City’s Empire State Building, and Taipei 101, and used to hold the world record for “most buildings climbed unassisted.”
