Residents on the coast of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte went to evacuation centers after the Phivolcs raised a tsunami warning on Wednesday morning.

According to the report on “24 Oras” by GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon, fisherfolk also took their boats to higher ground due to the warning triggered by the massive earthquake in Taiwan.

Taiwan is 500 kilometers away from Ilocos Norte.

The tsunami warning was cancelled at past 10 a.m.

Marcel Tabije, Officer of the Ilocos Norte Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, reported that preemptive evacuations were initiated in Pagudpud and Bangui but were later canceled.

Similarly, in Claveria, Cagayan, classes were suspended as a precautionary measure, despite the area not being directly affected by the tsunami warning. Residents expressed relief as no evacuations were necessary.

Authorities advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the waters, especially those with small boats, due to potential aftershocks.

In Aparri, Cagayan, coastal schools also suspended classes as a precaution, although no significant changes were observed in sea conditions. —NB, GMA Integrated News
