The Philippines bagged its first gold medal in the Asian Age Group Championships at the New Clark City on Wednesday.

Swimmer Jamesray Mishael Ajido ruled the boys 100-m butterfly event to claim the gold after clocking 55.98 seconds. This also reset the meet record previously held by Yu Xiang Wang of China in 2019 at 56.36 seconds.

“I was expecting to win a medal, but I’m not sure what color. I’m happy that I won the gold,” said Ajido from La Salle Green Hills. “This is special for me. I am proud to win medals for the Philippines. I dedicate my victory to the Lord and my family,”

Yusei Nishiono of Japan finished second with 56.05 seconds, while Yung-Cheng Kan of Chinese Taipei placed third with 56.79 seconds.

Ajido also claimed the bronze medal on Tuesday in the boys 50-m freestyle.

The Philippines currently has four medals in the tourney with Heather White bagging bronze in the girls 100-m butterfly event, and Micaela Mojdeh with another bronze at the girls 200-m butterfly event.
