The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is aiming for zero maritime casualty as its units prepare for the 2024 Holy Week.

The PCG will be on high alert from March 23 to April 3 as PCG Commandant Ronnie Gavan orders intensified seaborne patrols and safety measures on all ports and waterways in the country.

“This is to ensure the smooth operations of sea transport facilities, convenient sea travel, and safety of local and foreign tourists in major beaches and private resorts amid the anticipated increased volume of maritime traffic,” PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armando Balilo, said in a statement.

There will also be a 24/7 monitoring of nautical highways in western and eastern seaboards and inter-island routes, while CG medical officers and PCG Auxiliary volunteers will be deployed for further assistance.

“The PCG Commandant has also instructed Coast Guard personnel and PCGA volunteers to exercise vigilance and extend patience during passenger and luggage checks,”the statement read.

Port terminal and vessel inspections will also be conducted, while trained medical rescuers and seaborne patrol units are being prepared to respond to possible rescue operations. —LDF, GMA Integrated News
