Woman shot by police in Woodland Hills had BB gun resembling a pistol, authorities say
A 42-year-old woman who was allegedly armed with a BB gun when she was shot by police at the end of a chase in Woodland Hills was in custody on suspicion of felony evading.
She was taken Monday, May 26, from the 20900 block of Arcana Road to a hospital in serious condition, said Lyndsey Lantz of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Officers had been called at 7:15 a.m. that day to the 13000 block of Sherman Way in Van Nuys to investigate a white van with bullet holes in its windshield. They found Claudia Corugedo in the driver’s seat, police said.
Officers learned she had a felony warrant and tried to detain her, but she pointed a pistol at her own throat and took off, prompting a chase, police said.
The pursuit ended on Arcana, but Corugedo refused to surrender and continued to point the pistol at her throat while also holding a machete, according to the LAPD.
Corugedo got out of the van and headed toward the front door of a home, police said, armed with the pistol and a knife, prompting officers to open fire, police said.
“Corugedo was struck by gunfire and collapsed near the entryway of the residence,” according to a police statement. “The investigation determined Corugedo was in possession of a BB gun designed to resemble a semiautomatic pistol. A metal machete was also recovered at the scene.”
