More K-9 units eyed in MRT stations
THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced plans to deploy additional K-9 units in MRT-3 stations, replacing traditional X-ray machines to help reduce long passenger lines without compromising safety.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon personally inspected the Philippine Coast Guard's K-9 facility in Clark, Pampanga, recently, to evaluate the capability of bomb-sniffing dogs and their handlers, saying they will soon be stationed in one of Metro Manila's busiest light rail systems.
Dizon said that this move is in line with the government's commitment to safer, faster, and more convenient public transport. "We want security that is both tight and efficient," he said.
"By introducing highly trained K-9 units alongside advanced AI-enabled CCTV systems and heightened security presence, we can make long queues at X-ray checkpoints a thing of the past," Dizon said over the weekend.
The plan, which is part of the administration's broader "Bagong Pilipinas" initiative, is aimed at modernizing not only transportation infrastructure but also the overall commuter experience.
Dizon emphasized that while speed and convenience are a priority, "safety will never be sacrificed."
Officials explained that the X-ray scanners — long criticized for causing bottlenecks during rush hours — were no longer the most efficient way to secure rail stations.
Bomb-sniffing dogs, trained to identify explosives without intrusive inspection methods, provide a faster, non-disruptive alternative.
Meanwhile, new-generation AI-powered CCTV cameras are being installed to monitor platforms, entrances, and trains in real-time, ensuring immediate response to suspicious activities.
The K-9 teams, composed of Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds, have undergone rigorous training to meet international detection standards, according to the PCG.
Transportation experts also noted that combining human security, K-9s, and technology is a global best practice.
The DOTr said the phased deployment of K-9 units will begin in May. X-ray machines will be gradually removed as new security layers are fully operational.
"This is about giving Filipinos the public transportation system they deserve — one that is modern, efficient, and above all, safe," said Dizon.
