'Impeach trial can continue even if ICC summons Sara'
A CONGRESSMAN from Manila said the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte could continue even if the International Criminal Court (ICC) summons her.
The vice president's father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, is being investigated by the ICC in connection with the drug war implemented during his term. There were speculations that she too could also be probed by the ICC.
Third District Rep. Joel Chua said during a press conference on Monday he believes that the impeachment trial would continue unless the court summons her.
If it does, Chua said, there might be a problem.
Chua is part of the House of Representatives' 11-member team of impeachment prosecutors.
Last Feb. 5, the House impeached Vice President Duterte and transmitted the impeachment complaint to the Senate which has constitutional authority to try and decide impeachment cases.
On Feb. 18, Duterte filed before the Supreme Court a petition challenging the impeachment complaint that had been transmitted to the Senate.
The vice president has denied any involvement in or knowledge of the alleged Davao Death Squad when she was vice mayor and mayor of Davao City.
