BI nabs Korean fraudster
THE Bureau of Immigration Detention Facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig City, is holding a South Korean who is wanted in Seoul for telecommunications fraud.
South Korean authorities claim that Park Seungeon, 24, is a part of a telecom fraud organization that provides fraudulent low-interest loans to victims who want to settle other debts.
Reports indicate that Park's group defrauded its victims of more than 20.1 million won, or approximately $14,000.
"Interpol red notice was issued against Park a year ago, following the issuance of a warrant of arrest by the Incheon district court in Seoul after charging him with fraud by means of phone calls to victims," BI-FSU chief Rendel Ryan Sy said.
Before being apprehended on Feb. 27, 2025, on Bradco Avenue, Parañaque City, by members of the BI's Fugitive Search Unit (FSU), Park had been hiding in the Philippines for two years.
An examination of Park's travel history revealed that he arrived in the Philippines as a visitor on Aug. 19, 2022, and has not left the country since.
Park will be placed on the immigration blacklist and will be unable to travel to the Philippines after his deportation to South Korea.
