Over 1,000 hectares of mountainous areas have been affected by forest fires in multiple towns in Benguet, according to John Consulta’s 24 Oras Weekend report on Saturday.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has responded to seven forest fires in the province, the report said.
It took authorities four hours to reach the fire in Tuba town, where four people were rescued.
Aside from Tuba, forest fires were also reported in Itogon, Kabayan, and Bokod.
“Ongoing pa rin yung forest fire natin, although controlled naman sa mga malalapit sa Kabayan, sa mga tower,” said BFP Tuba Fire Marshall Fire Senior Inspector Meson Asing Jr.
(The forest fire is still ongoing, although it’s under control in areas near Kabayan and the towers)
According to data from BFP-CAR, more than 60 forest fires broke out in the region since January 1.
Data from BFP recorded a total of 2,518 fires in the country from Jan. 1 to Feb. 23, 200 of which were in Metro Manila. — Jiselle Casucian/DVM/VDV, GMA Integrated News
