De La Salle University and University of Santo Tomas toppled their respective foes to remain undefeated in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday.
The defending champion Lady Spikers swept Far Eastern University, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22, while the Golden Tigresses overcame a first set hiccup to eke out an 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 triumph against the gallant University of the East.
Both La Salle and UST improved to 2-0 while FEU and UE dropped to an even 1-1 card.
Reigning MVP Angel Canino starred anew with 13 points and seven receptions while Shevana Laput chipped in 10 markers as the Taft crew remained as deadly for their title retention bid.
In the second game, UST recovered from a shaky start to deny the Lady Red Warriors as the latter staged a comeback in the fourth set with middle blocker Riza Nogales bringing them to a one-point deficit, 19-20.
Angge Poyos took advantage of an overpass from UE to bring UST to a 23-20 cushion before Reg Jurado soared for an attack from the opposite side to deliver the match point. Poyos then went through her blockers to seal the four-set escape.
UST and La Salle will take on each other on Sunday with their spotless slates at stake while FEU and UE will also collide on the same day.
