Sixteen years in prison is not enough punishment for the person who was convicted of killing overseas Filipino worker Jullebee Ranara in 2023, her loved ones said.

Accoring to Chino Gaston’s report on “24 Oras,” Jullebee’s husband Joey Marce said, “Kung ano yung ginawa, dapat ganoon din po, ‘di ba?”

(Shouldn’t the punishment be the same as the crime?)

Department of Migrant Workers officer in charge Hans Cacdac said 15 years in prison is the maximum sentence for juvenile offenders.

The convict in Jullebee’s case is the son of her employer. He was 17 years old when he committed the crimes against the OFW.

Cacdac said that the DMW will assist in filing a civil case to seek damages from the convict’s family.

“We will have at least a ten to 14-day period to prepare for this forthcoming. We committed to assist the family in the filing for civil damages which is still part and parcel of the path for justice,” Cacdac said.

The DMW has not yet determined the amount that can be claimed for damages, for it still depends on Kuwaiti law.

On Wednesday, the appellate court of Kuwait upheld the guilty verdict and sentence on the 17-year-old son of her employer, who reportedly raped and even made Jullebee pregnant.

Ranara’s body was found in the desert, and her remains were brought back to Manila on January 28, 2023.

She was buried on February 5, 2023 morning, in a cemetery in Las Piñas City. —NB, GMA Integrated News
