Arman Guinto and Jiwen Sinuto connived as Arellano University finally got its groove in the NCAA Season 99 men’s volleyball tournament with a decisive 25-19, 25-10, 25-19 sweep of slumping Lyceum of the Philippines University on Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
Guinto poured in 14 points built on 13 attacks, including the game-winning kill, and one block alongside six digs while Sinuto tallied 14 markers as well to steer the Chiefs to their back-to-back games to improve to 2-1.
Arellano, which opened its campaign with a four-set loss to Colegio de San Juan de Letran, also kept the Pirates winless with a 0-3 card.
It was a tight showdown at first in the third frame with the Pirates keeping the Chiefs within striking distance, 12-15. But Arellano, despite the absence of head coach Sherwin Meneses, responded with a 3-0 rampage that widened the gap to six.
Jake Teves then capped a 6-3 run with an ace to deliver the match point at 24-15 before LPU, which was looking to bounce back from two early losses to San Beda University and San Sebastian College-Recoletos, salvaged four points to breathe some life to their campaign.
But Guinto made sure to put in the finishing kill, going over just one blocker to seal the deal.
Only six players from LPU managed to convert a point with team captain Jun Edang leading with eight points while Earl Polis and Jhon Aquino chipped in six markers apiece.
