The Philippine women’s football team absorbed a 2-0 defeat to Scotland to kick off its campaign in the 2024 Pinatar Cup on Saturday at the Pinatar Arena in Spain.

The Filipinas, though, can still salvage a podium finish as they will square off with Slovenia for battle for bronze on Tuesday.

Martha Thomas punished the Philippine representative as the 5-foot-7 striker completed a brace to seal the victory for Scotland, which arranged a gold medal duel with Finland.

Thomas, who plays for the Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s Super League in England, converted the breakthrough goal in the 22nd minute before another goal from her 14 minutes later completed the 2-nil victory.

The Filipinas will now take on a Slovenian squad that took a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Finland.

In the 2023 edition, the Philippines went winless in three games, falling to Wales, Scotland, and Iceland to cap off the invitational tournament held annually in Spain.
