In observance of the National Dental Health Month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reminded the public Wednesday that using toothpastes that contain fluoride is an effective way to fight off tooth decay.

In an advisory, the FDA pointed out that it is important to choose the right type of toothpaste to maintain optimal oral health as poor oral hygiene could result in dental problems or other illnesses.

“Oral health is a fundamental component of one’s overall health and well-being. Poor oral hygiene can lead to several conditions such as tooth decay, gingivitis, bad breath, and periodontal diseases. Some studies have linked poor oral hygiene with an increased risk for respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney disease,” read the advisory, signed by FDA Director General Samuel Zacate.

The Department of Health (DOH) earlier said that seven out of ten Filipinos (73%) have tooth decay.

People should thus brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush, according to the FDA.

Toothbrushes should also be replaced every three to four months, and people should consult with a dentist every six months or twice a year.

The agency also reminded the public to verify if the cosmetic products they use are FDA-approved, and to check their expiration date before usage.

Sale, distribution, complaint, and/or adverse event related to violative cosmetic products may be reported to info@fda.gov.ph or (02) 8857-1900 loc. 8113 or 8107.—Gisele Ombay/AOL, GMA Integrated News
