MANILA, Philippines — Fake booking scams increased in the second week of March, the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) of the Philippine National Police reported yesterday.
ACG director Maj. Gen. Sidney Hernia said from an average of one to six cases in January and February, the scams increased to 10 cases in one week by the second week of March.
Hernia said most of the victims were food delivery riders.
The perpetrators, Hernia said, book orders through cash on delivery. Once the riders arrive at the designated delivery address, the suspects suddenly become unreachable.
The victims are then left hanging as the suspects fail to settle the payment for their orders.
Hernia reminded delivery riders to verify orders before accepting by checking the details and sticking to reputable food delivery platforms with robust security measures.
“If possible, opt for online payments, and be alert to new scam trends or variations. Awareness is the key to preventing fraud,” he said.
For those who have fallen victim to the scam, Hernia said they should document everything and immediately report to the authorities.
