Immigration officers rescued another suspected victim of a mail-order bride scheme who was bound for China, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced Wednesday.

According to the agency, the woman attempted to depart for Fujian, China on April 8 with her alleged husband at the Ninoy Aquino Int`ernational Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.

The two presented a marriage certificate and said they were married in 2019.

However, contrary to the certificate, the victim said that she and her alleged husband were married inside a travel agency in Manila. She later admitted that they paid P100,000 to obtain the certificate, which was found to be genuine.

“This is yet again another case of the mail-order-bride scheme wherein women are promised a better life abroad but are made to work as domestic workers with little to no salaries,” Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco said in a statement.

The BI said both the victim and the alleged husband were turned over to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for further investigation.—Joahna Lei Casilao/AOL, GMA Integrated News
