MANILA, Philippines — At least 500 prisoners from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa have been transferred to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm.
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said the prisoners left the NBP on March 16 and arrived in Davao the next day.
Members of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines assisted 144 BuCor personnel in escorting the inmates.
BuCor chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. said the transfer is part of the bureau’s efforts to decongest the national penitentiary as well as in preparation for the closure of Bilibid in 2028.
