Two New California Sandwich Shops Are Piling Up Subs in Las Vegas

Eye-popping sandwiches from Los Angeles’s Fat Sal’s Deli, plus another sub shop straight from the Bay Area, have arrived in Vegas For more than 14 years, Fat Sal’s Deli has been serving sandwiches, shakes, and fries in the Los Angeles area. Its first Las Vegas location opened September 11 at 450 Fremont inside Neonopolis, serving up loaded meals until 2 a.m.
To get an idea of the menu at Fat Sal’s, look to the Big Fat Fatty — a 30-inch garlic hero piled high with cheesesteak, cheeseburgers, pastrami, chicken fingers, bacon, mozzarella sticks, fried eggs, fries, onion rings, chili, and marinara sauce. It’s $99.99 — or free if you can guzzle it down in under 40 minutes. The rest of Fat Sal’s sandwiches are slightly more tame while still skewing over-the-top. The Fat Bodega ($18.99) loads a butter-grilled hero with a blend of ground beef, sauteed onions, and cheese and tops it off with onion rings, fries, lettuce, and tomato. The Fat Jerry ($19.99) drew Guy Fieri’s attention in a spot on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for its pile of ribeye steak, grilled onions, melted cheese, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, bacon, fried eggs, and fries.
In addition to sandwiches, Fat Sal’s fries come loaded with melted cheddar and mozzarella, gravy, chili, Philly cheesesteak, bacon, and salami — all the greasy toppings primed for soaking up Fremont Street’s yardstick-sized daiquiris. And, somewhat inexplicably, its milkshakes are blended with a slice of cheesecake. The deli is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to midnight and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. A second Las Vegas Fat Sal’s is slated to open in November in Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile Shops.
Meanwhile, in Henderson, a Sacramento sandwich shop is loading robust piles of deli meat on Dutch crunch rolls. The Sandwich Spot opened last week at 2601 Windmill Parkway near Pecos Road. Born in Sacramento in 2007, the shop has two locations in Reno where it serves sandwiches like the Tahoe with turkey, prosciutto, avocado, and Swiss cheese. In southern Nevada, sandwiches are named after Las Vegas landmarks. Ham, salami, prosciutto, and provolone comprise the Sphere, while the 702 comes with turkey, ham, roast beef, and cheese. The Sandwich Spot has not yet posted its hours of operation.
