Woman hospitalized after police chase and standoff in Woodland Hills
An allegedly armed woman was shot early Monday, May 26, in a Woodland Hills neighborhood after a slow-moving police chase that involved a van and at least three dogs.
Around 7:15 a.m. Los Angeles police responded to a report of a shooting, and a van with visible bullet holes, near the intersection of Sherman Way and Woodman Avenue in Van Nuys, the Los Angeles Police Department said Monday. Officers found a woman standing outside the vehicle, which reportedly had three dogs inside.
During their initial contact, police said, the woman pulled out a handgun and pointed it at herself before climbing back into the van and fleeing, prompting a pursuit.
Around 8:10 a.m., the suspect drove into a cul-de-sac and stopped in the area of Marmora Drive and Arcana Road in Woodland Hills. However, police said the woman refused to surrender, remained armed, and was observed pointing the firearm at her head.
Police called in SWAT specialists to the scene and, about an hour later, while the suspect was out of the vehicle, an officer-involved shooting took place. Police did not give details about the shooting.
By 10:15 a.m., the suspect, 42, was taken into custody and transported by the Los Angeles Fire Department to a hospital where she was in serious condition. Police would not say if she was struck by a bullet fired by an officer or if she shot herself.
The investigation is ongoing and no further details were available.
