VP refuses to justify funds use to House
(UPDATE) VICE President Sara Duterte is insistent that she will not answer any questions on her use of confidential funds posed by any allies of Speaker Martin Romualdez.
In a recent press briefing in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, Duterte said she will never explain to members of the House of Representatives anything regarding her alleged disbursement of P125 million in confidential funds.
"I will not explain myself, especially to the members of the House of Representatives," she said in Filipino. "Because, let me give you an example. The owner of the Tingog party-list is Martin Romualdez."
Duterte said that if she would answer to Tingog and its nominee, House Assistant Majority Leader Rep. Jude Acidre, it would mean that she would answer directly to Romualdez.
Romualdez, she said, has "no personality to get the budget for the entire country" because his jurisdiction is his own district.
So he goes through a party-list, which is national, Duterte said.
"What he did is he made a party-list, which can access funds for the entire country," she said.
The use of confidential funds is included in one of the articles of impeachment against Duterte, the trial for which is expected to begin on July 30.
Meanwhile, Duterte again visited the rally of Manila mayoralty bet Isko Moreno Domagoso on Friday night on Arlegui Street, Quiapo, a day after her first appearance at Domagoso's rally in Tondo.
The third district is home to Rep. Joel Chua, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability, who initiated the investigations against the vice president for her use of confidential funds.
"I am here in his district, introducing myself. I am Sara Duterte. I can fight in the dirty water," Duterte said in Filipino.
She lashed out at Chua, especially for being forced to take an oath during a hearing of his committee and for summoning a staff at the Office of the Vice President.
"You are targeting me; you want me out. You are the ones destroying me. Why are you involving my fellow workers?" Duterte said.
Duterte also recounted a conversation where her brother, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, confronted Chua, who told him that they were just following orders as "soldiers" for Romualdez.
She later endorsed Domagoso's congressional bet for the third district, Manila councilor Apple Nieto.
Nieto is the sister of re-electionist Vice Mayor Yul Servo Nieto, who is running under the banner of Manila re-electionist Honey Lacuna.
"I will give this apple to Apple Nieto ... Ma'am, shove this into the mouth of Chua until he chokes to his death," Duterte said.
"What can we do for Apple Nieto? Yes, you should not only vote, but you should also campaign for her, carry her in all precincts and tell our colleagues, give that son of a bitch Joel Chua zero votes," she added.
She also implored voters not to be swayed by promises of candidates, as well as endorsements by dynastic family members and famous personalities.
Duterte also used her stage time to endorse the so-called "Duter10" senatorial candidates, as she said that they will be the ones who could push to bring back her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, home from The Hague, where he is awaiting trial for crimes against humanity in connection to his bloody war on drugs.
In a subsequent interview, Nieto told The Manila Times that she was "delighted" to be endorsed by Duterte.
