Trump administration, California head to court over National Guard use today. Watch the hearing here
Legal teams for President Donald Trump and Gov. Gavin Newsom head to court today in their battle over whether the president can continue to control California’s National Guard troops and deploy them to help with his administration’s immigration enforcement operations and the massive protests that have followed.
A three-judge panel on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is set to hold a hearing today at noon about how Trump federalized the state’s National Guard — without the consent of Newsom or Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass — and moved more than 4,000 troops to Los Angeles to respond to large-scale demonstrations over immigration enforcement efforts.

A federal judge last week ruled the move was “illegal” and ordered the state’s National Guard back under the control of Newsom. But Trump’s team appealed, and the 9th Circuit in San Francisco granted a temporary stay, pending today’s hearing.
Virtual oral arguments will commence this afternoon, and we’re watching to see if the three judges — two are Trump appointees; former President Joe Biden appointed one — will continue their stay while they deliberate or allow the earlier ruling giving Newsom back command of the Guard to go into effect.
The hearing is being held remotely and can be viewed below.
