Teen arrested in fatal shooting of man in Long Beach last month

LONG BEACH — A 15-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly shooting a 21-year-old man to death in Long Beach, police said Tuesday.

The killing took place on April 12, when officers responded to the 0 block of Cedar Walk at about 5:50 p.m. following reports of shots fired. They provided immediate aid to the victim until Long Beach Fire Department paramedics arrived and took him to a hospital, where he later died.

Authorities later identified him as Brandon Villarreal from Long Beach. The shooting happened near where the Grand Prix of Long Beach was taking place. Police have said the shooting followed a verbal dispute.

On Sunday, homicide detectives with the Long Beach Police Department executed a search warrant during a pedestrian stop in Barstow, where they arrested a juvenile suspect in Villarreal’s death.

The department said detectives received information indicating the suspect had traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, but was returning to California on Sunday.

He was taken to Long Beach City Jail for processing before being transferred to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, where he was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail, police said.

His name was being withheld due to his age.

“Long Beach police homicide detectives received assistance from and would like to thank the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, as well as the FBI Criminal Apprehension Team,” the LBPD said in a statement.

Police said detectives have presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for potential criminal prosecution.

Anyone with information regarding the fatal shooting was urged to contact homicide detectives Eric Thai or Chasen Contreras at 562-570-7244. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
