Support for agricultural sector pushed
SEN. Cynthia Villar said it was imperative to strengthen the country's food supply system by modernizing agriculture and increasing investment in farm inputs, as well as postharvest facilities and irrigation systems.
She added that revitalizing the agriculture sector could encourage more Filipinos to pursue farming.
"If there is assurance of income in agriculture, the young people will go back to agriculture, and many overseas Filipino workers will be encouraged to go home and be with their families because they can earn here," Villar said during the 17th Philippine Food Expo at the World Trade Center in Pasay City on Friday.
The event, organized by the Philippine Food Processors and Exporters Organization, and Spencer Food Corp., aims to showcase the country's food and beverage products.
"We have abundant produce, and our farmers can compete in the global market via exports," Villar said.
"Our Filipino cuisine is renowned for its distinctive blend of flavors, and it has continued to evolve in response to global influences and international techniques," she added.
