Spectrum outage affects parts of Los Angeles, Ventura counties after wires cut by at least 1 suspect
Spectrum customers in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties lost network access Sunday, June 15, after at least one person cut service lines in Van Nuys, the company said. Internet, cable and home phone services were affected.
Spectrum fiber optic cables were intentionally cut in multiple places, apparently by thieves looking for valuable copper wire to sell. Spectrum said its cables and lines do not contain copper or other precious metals.
The lines cut Sunday were left on the ground because they didn’t have copper in them, Spectrum said.
“Criminal acts of network vandalism have become an issue affecting the entire telecommunications industry, not just Spectrum, largely due to the increase in the price of precious metals,” Spectrum said. “These acts of vandalism are not only a crime, but also affect our customers, local businesses and potentially emergency services.”
Technicians restored service in Ventura County on Sunday morning and continued to restore service in Los Angeles County in the afternoon, Spectrum said. Spectrum didn’t specify the number of customers impacted by the outage.
Spectrum is working with the Los Angeles Police Department to investigate the vandalism.
Officials ask anyone with information can contact Spectrum at 833-404-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $25,000 is available for information that leads to an arrest.
