Port interchange work will close Vincent Thomas Bridge on-ramp in San Pedro

Ongoing work to reconfigure ramps serving a major San Pedro interchange will close a 110 Freeway on-ramp around the Vincent Thomas Bridge during nighttime hours through March 15.

The 110 on-ramp at Front Street and Harbor Boulevard needs to be closed to allow a truck hauling operation that will remove material in an ongoing $130 million transportation project to reconfigure the major interchange at State Route 47/Vincent Thomas Bridge and Front/Harbor in San Pedro. An alternative on ramp, at John S. Gibson Boulevard to the north, will remain open.

The on-ramp at Harbor/Front streets and SR 47 is set to be closed during the follwing times:

8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday to Thursday, Feb. 24-27.
9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-March 1.
8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, March 3, to March 6.
9 p.m. to 6 a.m. March 7 to 8.
8 p.m. to 6 a.m. March 10 to 13.
9 p.m. to 6 a.m. March 14 to 15.

The project — not related to the upcoming full closure of the V-T Bridge to install a new roadway — has been ongoing and is scheduled to be finished in December 2026. The work is being done by the Port of Los Angeles and the California Department of Transportation.

The current work on the 110 Freeway ramps is part of the first phase of a multi-phase project that began in July, and involves grading and removing materials, retaining wall construction, on- and off-ramp construction north of the Vincent Thomas Bridge; and improvements to North Front Street and Knoll Drive.

The goal is to reduce travel times, alleviate congestion, and improve motorist and pedestrian safety on the highly traveled roadway that often sees a lineup of large trucks serving port terminals.

The interchange provides access to San Pedro, Wilmington and Terminal Island. It also serves the West Basin Container Terminal.

The overall project will replace an existing southbound SR-47 off-ramp from the Vincent Thomas Bridge, currently located on the south side, with a new off-ramp on the north side. Port of Los Angeles officials said additional improvements include realigning the existing on-ramp to the northbound 110 Freeway connector, modifying the northbound SR-47 off-ramp onto Harbor Boulevard, and modifying the northbound SR-47 on-ramp onto the V-T Bridge toward Terminal Island.

The project will also realign Knoll Drive to accommodate a new on/off-ramp system.
