LA City Council will hear former Fire Chief Kristin Crowley’s appeal case

The Los Angeles City Council is set to hear former Fire Chief Kristin Crowley’s appeal on Tuesday, March 4, a critical test of whether council members will support Mayor Karen Bass’ decision to fire Crowley or push back against the mayor’s authority.

Crowley, who was dismissed by the mayor last week, formally appealed her firing on Thursday, Feb. 27. Under the City Charter, she needs support from at least 10 of the 15 city council members to be reinstated as chief—a threshold that may be difficult to reach.

Tuesday’s meeting will take place in the at the City Hall’s John Ferraro Council Chamber, Room 340.

City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson originally scheduled Crowley’s public hearing for Friday in the city’s Van Nuys City Hall, but reversed course and rescheduled it for next Tuesday after facing backlash. His office announced the meeting just hours after Crowley filed her appeal, giving the public less than 24 hours’ notice to attend the meeting in Van Nuys.

Among the critics, United Firefighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC) condemned the 24-hour notice as inadequate, accusing the council of “attempting to bury this issue when nobody is watching and holding them accountable.”

On Friday, UFLAC President Freddy Escobar welcomed the move to Tuesday and reaffirmed the union’s support for Crowley.

“Now we move on to Tuesday, where it’s our hope that Chief Crowley will be given the opportunity to present her case and set the record straight,” Escobar said in a statement to this publication. “Our firefighters will be there to support Chief Crowley because they know the reality is she was dismissed for telling the truth.”

Tensions between Crowley and Bass had been escalating for weeks. Crowley has blamed city budget cuts for weakening the fire department’s ability to respond to the wildfires, while Bass has reportedly faulted Crowley and others for failing to warn her about the severity of last month’s windstorms before she traveled abroad.
