Go urges youth to vote in midterm polls
SEN. Christopher Go appealed to the Filipino youth to take an active role in nation-building by participating in the May 12 midterm elections.
The chairman of the Senate Committee on Youth, in a statement, said the youth sector plays an important role in steering the country's future.
"If we want to hear the voice of the ordinary people, the youth must participate in the voting process. This is where the real change starts," Go said in Filipino.
Voters will elect 12 senators, 316 members of the House of Representatives, and thousands of provincial, city and municipal officials in the midterm polls.
Go reminded the youth that suffrage is not only a right but a responsibility.
He urged first-time voters to educate themselves about candidates' platforms and track records and to engage in constructive political dialogue.
"This is not about choosing the candidates. This is about choosing your future, [the future] of your family, and your country. Let us not waste this opportunity," he said.
The reelectionist senator added, "Let us remember that the youth is the hope and future of our country."
Go acknowledged the growing political awareness among younger Filipinos, citing the increased turnout in voter registration and active involvement in online discussions.
The Commission on Elections said more than 2 million first-time voters are expected to join the polls in 2025, many of whom belong to Generation Z.
