Go pushes better support system for cancer patients
SEN. Bong Go on Tuesday renewed his call for the establishment of a government support system for cancer patients.
Go is a staunch supporter of the Cancer Assistance Fund, which aims to support Filipinos undergoing cancer treatment but lacking financial means.
Go said his commitment to help cancer patients was renewed with his reconnection with John Paul Cuilao, a young cancer survivor he met in 2018 at the Philippine Children's Medical Center (PCMC).
Cuilao was four when he was diagnosed with leukemia.
Now 11 years old and in remission, he recalled his encounter with Go.
"We met when I was four years old ... It was his birthday, and he visited PCMC. We became friends ever since," Cuilao said, adding the senator once treated him to cotton candy after they watched a basketball game together.
Cuilao remembered the emotional weight of his disease and how his family rallied behind him during his battle with cancer.
"When my mother found out I had cancer, she didn't tell me right away ... Then, she cried. Then, when I went bald, the men in my family all shaved their heads, so I was not the only one who was bald," he said.
Go said that to him, Cuilao had become a symbol of hope and a reminder of the lives behind cancer statistics.
He added that many cancer patients like Cuilao could have been saved if proper government interventions were available.
